Becoming a Residence Life Staff Member

So you’re considering joining us…

Here’s a definition of terms: 

Resident Assistant (RA): This is a campus position in which some main objectives are to serve as a resource for residents, enforce school policy, address student issues and needs as required, serve as a liaison between school administration and students,  and to serve as a role model for other students. RAs are generally responsible for one floor of a particular building. RAs serve in an on-duty rotation from Thursday through Saturdays.

Head Resident (HR): This is a campus position in which some main objectives are to serve as a resource for all residents in a particular hall, enforce school policy, address student issues that may go beyond the scope of a RA, communicate student issues and needs to the Assistant Director of Residence Life, serve in a supervisory role to a RA staff, and to serve in a position of advanced leadership on campus.

Here’s a few things you ought to know…

  1. In order to be a RA, the student must possess a 2.5 QPR or above, and maintain this throughout the tenure of their position
  2. RAs are required to return to campus for Fall Training in mid August, and mid-January for Winter Training.
  3. The selection process for RAs begins in January and decisions are usually made by late February, early March.
  4. You may not hold other campus jobs while holding a RA position, without the appropriate approval.
  5. RAs are strictly bound by confidentiality, as they deal with sensitive issues on an almost-daily basis.
  6. RAs are responsible for enforcing school policy.
