Why I give: Rehema Kahurananga '04

Why is it important for you to give to the College?

I am from Kenya but grew up in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, which is where I went to high school. Our senior year was all about excitedly applying to colleges and universities—primarily in the United States—with the hope that we would get in. Having sent applications to multiple schools, I soon realized that getting in was half the journey—and getting financial aid was the other.

While my parents could cover a portion of my education fees, I still needed additional financial support. Randolph College provided me with that support, which I now know was made possible through others giving to the College. That is why I give to Randolph.

You give monthly to the Annual Fund. Why is this an easy way for you to help the College? Why did you choose this method?

My daily to-do list is pretty full! Giving monthly to the Annual Fund through an automatic account deduction means I don’t have to worry about writing any checks or manually transferring any funds.

Share a little about yourself.

I am a storyteller at heart. I came back from the United States to Nairobi, Kenya, in 2006. As a communication major, I applied for and was accepted to become a staff writer with the region’s best-selling women’s magazine. That became my career home for the next five years. Following that, I had a desire to gain experience in communication and public relations, and that is where I have been since 2011, working in fields including energy, finance, and technology.

I’m really excited to be soon joining our national carrier, Kenya Airways, as their new head of content development, which means I get to focus on storytelling again. Outside of work, I am a single mother to an amazing 9-year-old boy. He reminds me often that life is beautiful.

What’s your favorite memory from your time at the College?

Without a doubt, the friendships I made and the overall growth I experienced.

What was your favorite tradition?

Even and Odd week. Though it wasn’t a tradition, I used to really enjoy the Annual Dance Concert and activities run by Pan World, the international students club.

Why would you encourage others to give to their alma mater?

For the simple reason of impact. It’s easy to feel that you have to sign a check with many zeros in order to make any meaningful impact. I’ve come to learn that the College appreciates any amount. Whatever you give could be just the amount needed to make the difference in a student getting to experience a wonderful education at Randolph College. Every bit counts.
