Randolph to host 17th annual MARCUS Conference

marcus_posterRandolph College will host the 17th annual Mid-Atlantic Regional Conference for Undergraduate Scholarship (MARCUS) on October 10.

Since its inception in 1999, MARCUS has attracted students from colleges throughout Virginia and surrounding states. The event typically draws about 100 undergraduate researchers from a wide variety of academic disciplines, who showcase to showcase findings from research or creative projects. This is Randolph’s first year hosting the conference.

“It’s a great résumé-builder,” said Jenna Carr, office assistant for Randolph’s Center for Student Research. “The thing that is interesting about MARCUS is that in the same session a student might be presenting their artwork, the next person might present something about biochemistry.”

Randolph has been well-represented at the conference each year, with many students presenting findings from Summer Research and Senior Research projects. Physics professor Peter Sheldon, who is director of the Center for Student Research, encourages Randolph students who have recently completed scientific, artistic, or independent research projects to participate in this year’s conference.

“Research is not really research until you share what you’ve done with the public,” Sheldon said. “This is a research conference that really focuses on the good work of undergraduates, which is sometimes overlooked at non-undergraduate research conferences.”

Registration for the 2015 MARCUS Conference at Randolph College must be completed by midnight on September 15. For presentation guidelines, registration information, and more, please visit http://www.randolphcollege.edu/research/marcus/
