The Student Health Center does not provide notes or excuses to students for routine illnesses, injuries, or mental health problems that may lead to missed classes, labs, studios, exams, or deadlines. This policy resembles those of most other colleges and universities and is consistent with the recommendations of the American College Health Association.
Note: The Student Health Center will issue absence notices to students only if it is evident to the clinical provider that the student should not be in class.
When a student is hospitalized or has a serious, ongoing illness or injury, and with the student’s consent, the Health Center will contact the Associate Provost to provide support to ensure a speedy and smooth return to full academic life.
Randolph, with its strong emphasis on the Honor Code, expects that students are honest with their professors. Requiring a student to produce a note to prove their illness goes against that trust; therefore, it is best when students and faculty collaborate to resolve these issues. If faculty require that students bring in a note for a missed class, students should print a copy of this document and give it to the faculty member. Concerns or questions should be brought to the attention of the Associate Provost.
