Aaron Shreve, professor of political science, recently published “Boys and Their Toys: Status Inconsistency in Non-democratic Regimes and the Import of Major Weapon Systems,” in the Journal of Conflict Resolution.
In it, he and coauthor Richard A.I. Johnson examined the effect of regime type and status motivations on weapons imports, arguing that states suffering from higher levels of negative status inconsistency import a greater proportion of status symbol weapons.
