First-generation student Q&A: President Sue Ott Rowlands

Randolph College is bringing a new honor society, Tri-Alpha, to campus.

Tri-Alpha, which celebrates the academic accomplishments of first-generation college students, will be led by the College’s Office of Identity, Culture, and Inclusion, and Carly Pearce, assistant director of Randolph’s Master of Arts in Coaching and Sport Leadership program.

An induction ceremony will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 8, National First-Generation to College Day.

As we prepare for the ceremony, we will be profiling some of Randolph’s first-generation students—starting with President Sue Ott Rowlands.

Hometown: Duncan, Oklahoma

Colleges: Oklahoma Christian College (BS); University of Oklahoma (MFA)

What did you study in college?

At OCC, I studied speech communications with a theatre emphasis. At OU, I studied acting and directing.

What does it mean to you to be a first-generation student?

It means that I had access to higher education in ways that my parents did not. I value my degrees and recognize the privilege I had in getting them.

What are your memories of being a first-gen student?

I don’t think I was aware of being a first-gen student at the time I was going through school. It was only later that I realized the advantage I had as a first-gen student.

How did you become interested in your field of study and ultimate career path?
I had very good teachers in theatre at both the high school and college level. They were inspirational and encouraged me to pursue my goals as a theatre artist and teacher.

What advice would you give other first-gen students?

Stay in school and persist to your degree. Rely on your faculty members to help guide you and don’t give up!

What is special about Randolph College?

Randolph College recognizes the unique experience of being a first-generation student and provides support for students to be successful, no matter their background.
