Randolph’s Society of Physics Students named national Outstanding Chapter

Physics studentsThe Randolph College chapter of the Society of Physics Students (SPS) has won an Outstanding Chapter award for the eighth-straight year.

Presented by the national SPS organization, the designation honors the group for its activities during the 2014-2015 academic year.

“Being recognized by the national committee is significant for us,” said Peter Sheldon, a Randolph physics professor and advisor to the SPS. “Not too many chapters get recognized, and this recognition validates that we are doing meaningful and valuable things.”

Randolph’s SPS sponsors the annual Science Festival and also works on projects throughout the year to get people involved in science. Activities range from a science Jeopardy-style game to building robots and more. The Randolph chapter is also working to attend the SPS’s national convention this fall.

“Sometimes it is tough to find the time to get involved outside of the classroom, so it is great that when we do make that time, we can impact the community and do things that build on the students’ majors and career choices,” Sheldon said. “I work with a dedicated group of students who make things happen, and appreciate their contributions more than they can know.”
