Karin Warren, Randolph’s Herzog Family Chair of Environmental Studies & Science, participated in an Ocean Observatories Initiative (OOI) workshop in May at the Rutgers University Aquaculture Innovation Center in New Jersey.
The workshop was part of a larger effort to create a new edition of an open-source online laboratory manual full of free educational data activities for undergraduate and graduate oceanography classes.
The National Science Foundation’s OOI Ocean Data Labs Project is developing the manual.
Each chapter focuses on different oceanographic concepts and includes activities matched with important data literacy skills students need to know in order to think like scientists.
May’s workshop, led by Rutgers Department of Marine and Coastal Sciences staff, focused on finishing the updated manual and pilot testing new components of its current educator tools.
Warren was involved in the pilot testing, providing feedback on the implementation of the tools in in-person, hybrid, and/or online course spaces. She also presented on the value of incorporating interactive, hands-on activities in general courses, using examples from Randolph.
