Marcela Izquierdo Poza ’24 will continue her studies next year in Boston University’s Physics PhD program.
“I really like doing research and getting a PhD gives me a great opportunity to do so while also learning about new and more advanced physics topics,” she said. “I haven’t decided what to specialize in yet, but I really like their computational projects about particle physics and their research about neutrino oscillation.”
Izquierdo Poza, who grew up in Spain, would eventually like to work in the industry doing research or data analysis.
“I have always been interested in understanding how the world works and enjoyed problem solving, but while I was in high school I became very interested in astrophysics because of my dad,” she said. “I’ve always known I wanted to get a PhD. It’s one of the reasons why I decided to come to the United States for undergrad, to have more research opportunities in comparison to the ones I would’ve gotten in Europe.”
She found that at Randolph, majoring in physics and mathematics and developing close relationships with her professors as she explored her interests.
Izquierdo Poza played basketball and lacrosse during her time during the Red Brick Wall, while also tutoring through the Academic Services Center and serving in Student Government.
“Randolph was the perfect fit for me,” she said. “I’ve had an amazing academic experience, even doing the Summer Research Program twice with two different departments and professors, while having fun and being involved.”
