Endstation Theatre Company, Randolph College’s professional theatre in residence, will kick off its 2022 season with the original play Buried Deep: The Lynchburg Pools later this month.
The play, written by Josh Brewer, tells the story of how Lynchburg closed its public swimming pools in 1961 instead of desegregating them. All three pools would end up closed and filled in with dirt by 1968.
Buried Deep offers a glimpse into the tumultuous period through dramatization and readings from the historical record. It’s part of Endstation’s New Works Initiative, which enables visiting writers to become immersed in the stories of the community while creating original pieces.
The season—Endstation’s 16th— continues with Bye Bye Birdie and a talent showcase in July and, later in the year, The Twelve Dates of Christmas.
Birdie will feature Central Virginia native and 2019 Ultimate Elvis Champion Taylor Rodriguez as teen heartthrob Conrad Birdie.
