Every year, the Office of International Student Services sponsors an international photo contest in which Randolph students can share their pictures taken around the world. The winners of the 2014 contest were announced recently.
Abigail Smith ’15 took this picture after volunteering with a non-profit in her home country, Jamaica, during her summer break this year. “Paint Jamaica is a local non- profit organization that includes college students who paint murals in low income areas to inspire young minds and help residents feel a sense of pride in their community,” she said. “It is only one of many experiences which revealed to me that college students in Jamaica have the drive to develop the country from the ground up. … With every paint stroke the smiles of the children got wider with purpose; this is how I knew we were making a difference.”
“This photograph was taken at Castel Sant’ Angelo in Rome, Italy,” said Mariah Sager’18. “This room was decorated by Pope Paul III in the style of Ancient Roman wall paintings. Through the window, you can see St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican City, which is right down the street.”
Hoa Nguyen ’15 took this picture of Buddhist monks in the summer of 2012. “Buddhism is the popular religion in Vietnam,” she said. “People usually go to pagodas on specific days of the month to pray. The monks in the photo were on their way to the main building of the pagoda to practice a daily ritual to pray.”
