Randolph's Chapter of Society of Physics Students Once Again Wins National Award

LYNCHBURG — Randolph College’s chapter of the Society of Physics Students has once again received national recognition. The national Society of Physics Students (SPS) named Randolph College as an Outstanding Chapter for 2010.

This is the fifth year Randolph College’s chapter has received the award. Last year, the organization’s adviser and a physics professor, Peter Sheldon, was also named a finalist for Outstanding Chapter Advisor.

Randolph College is one of about 50 schools recognized from the about 700 members of the SPS. Virginia Tech and Northern Virginia Community College were the only other Virginia schools to receive the honor.

The national SPS bases the decision on the depth and breadth of each chapter’s efforts to provide community outreach promoting science, involvement in research and conferences, and other activities throughout campus.

Randolph College’s SPS was specifically recognized by the national chapter for its work organizing the annual Science Fest and Science Day. These events, which are offered free to the Lynchburg community, are designed to provide fun, hands-on activities and other events related to science.

Science Day (http://physics.randolphcollege.edu/sps/SciDay/) is a popular event designed specifically for teachers and local third through sixth graders. Science Fest http://physics.randolphcollege.edu/sps/scifest/), which is in its third year, offers the community a weekend of free lectures, activities, movies, and other fun events.

“I am very proud of our group of dedicated students, especially for all the work it takes to put on our annual Science Day,” Sheldon said. “We go on field trips, have college-wide competitions, and have really cool building projects. SPS has made a positive impact on the Randolph and Lynchburg communities through our numerous activities. The national recognition we have received is well-deserved.”
