In addition to holding the position of Assistant Professor of Comparative Philosophy at Randolph College (founded as Randolph-Macon Woman’s College in 1891), I am honored to serve as the first Coordinator of the Public Philosophy Initiative. For details about this endeavor, please click here. I also manage of the Department of Comparative Philosophy’s social media presence.
I hold a PhD and an MA in philosophy from the University of Illinois, as well as an MA in logic and philosophy of science from the Universidad Central de Venezuela. A first-generation college student, I am an award-winning interdisciplinary scholar who believes that scholarly excellence and teaching excellence go hand in hand.
A seasoned, passionate, and award-winning instructor with over sixteen years of teaching experience at the college level, I have taught at various colleges and research universities in the United States and abroad, including minority-serving institutions.
As a scholar and a teacher, I wear multiple hats. I specialize in non-Western (or global South) philosophies as well as on the history of Western philosophy (with an emphasis on the philosophies of J.L. Austin and L. Wittgenstein). In these fields, I am particularly interested in topics such as environmental ethics and the philosophy of race.
Born and raised in Caracas (Venezuela), I am the son of Afro-Colombian and Italian immigrants. My family consists of my beloved husband Luis (also from Venezuela), whom I married in Chicago in 2014, and Mona Estefanía, our petite mixed Russian Blue cat, whom we adopted in 2017. Luis and I are both proud vegans; naturally, Her Majesty is not.
