Intimate Partner Violence Intervention Program: An Offender-Focused, Evidenced-Based Approach to Deter and Reduce IPV
Date: January 19, 2022 (Webinar, 2 hours)
Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS)
Description of Training:
Through a partnership of law enforcement, victim advocates, social service providers, and community members, IPVI addresses all intimate partner violence offenders known to the criminal justice system. One of the structure’s essential elements is the ability to focus on offenders at the early stages of offending, before violence or patterns of behavior escalate, offering community-based outreach, support, and messaging about the potential consequences of continued IPV offending. Through this approach, jurisdictions are able to establish themselves as the entity responsible for addressing the violence, thus moving the burden of action off the victim (unlike many current IPV approaches). This workshop will focus on the principles behind IPVI, how it works, and the essential steps that jurisdictions can take to successfully implement this innovative initiative.

The Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) Virginia Center for School and Campus Safety (VCSCS) has provided a wide range of training to support school and campus threat assessment teams in serving the needs of their educational communities. Disability Justice is Key to Supporting Victims and Survivors
Date: February 21, 2022 (Webinar, 2 hours)
Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS)
Description of Training:
“Disability Justice is Key to Supporting Victims and Survivors” presented by advocate, organizer, attorney, strategist and writer, Lydia X.Z. Brown.
Disabled people’s lives and communities are marked by constant trauma and the specter of violence. The disability justice movement has arisen from and in response to trauma and everyday crisis. From electric shock torture to forced sterilization, from filicide to state violence, from abuses under law and in medicine to high rates of intimate partner violence and sexual assault, our communities have fought for decades against dehumanization. The Disability Justice framework invites us to reconsider what we have been taught about disability and disabled people, and to learn from disabled people’s wisdom and dreams of a world without violence. By focusing on access and care, Disability Justice offers us new ways of building community, offering support, and building a better future. In this session, participants will learn about the history of the disability justice movement, and how its principles can better inform support for victims and survivors.

Four Corners of Title IX Regulatory Compliance
Date: March 14-16, 2022 (In-Person at University of Mary Washington, 7.5 hours)
Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS), Peter Lake
Description of Training:
Title IX compliance may be the most complicated regulatory mandate colleges must comply with, especially with the release of new regulations on Title IX that took effect on August 14, 2020. Professor Peter Lake, an expert on Title IX and a well-known scholar in higher education law and policy, has developed a model for a well-ordered Title IX response system and has now tuned that model to recent Title IX legal developments. Lake’s Four Corners of Title IX Regulatory Compliance addresses the following metrics:
Organization and management – appropriately trained and positioned staff, website design, self-evaluation of the system.
Investigation, discipline and mediation – including fairness to both the complainant and respondent, potential challenges to our systems in court, appeals, review and grievance procedures for staff and students.
Supportive measures – support services for complainants and respondents, including interim measures and advocacy.
Culture and climate management – surveys and “checks,” violence prevention, and “voluntary compliance” with the spirit of the Title IX.
Join Professor Lake and learn how you can create a robust, comprehensive Title IX system that complies with both the letter and spirit of the law. This course will cover legal foundations and an in-depth discussion of the new regulations, in addition to the Four Corners of Title IX Regulatory Compliance.
