Randolph Receives Grant to Enhance Teacher Education with Technology

LYNCHBURG– Randolph College has received one of five “Teaching with Today’s Technology” program grants from the Verizon Foundation through a program of the Virginia Foundation for Independent Colleges (VFIC).”

The grant, totaling $20,000, will be used to enhance Randolph College’s Teacher Education Departments in the area of technology and the role it can play in the K-12 classroom experience. Randolph’s grant will focus on increasing pre-service teachers’ technology literacy as it pertains to K-12 standards based instruction.

It was written by Peter Sheldon, a Randolph physics professor, and Peggy Schimmoeller, a Randolph education professor.

The Verizon Foundation is one of the VFIC’s most distinguished corporate partners, contributing more than $3 million to the VFIC cause over the course of 55 years. Since 1998, Verizon’s commitment to improve student learning and faculty instructional effectiveness has made a meaningful impact on colleges across the Commonwealth.

Founded in 1952, the VFIC is a nonprofit fund-raising partnership supporting the programs and students of 15 leading private colleges in the Commonwealth: Bridgewater College, Emory & Henry College, Hampden-Sydney College, Hollins University, Lynchburg College, Mary Baldwin College, Marymount University, Randolph College, Randolph-Macon College, Roanoke College, Shenandoah University, Sweet Briar College, University of Richmond, Virginia Wesleyan College, and Washington & Lee University. The VFIC supports these traditional undergraduate institutions by securing gifts and grants for the consortium, increasing their visibility, facilitating collaborative initiatives among the colleges and supporting programs which ensure that these colleges’ personalized and effective educational experiences remain an affordable choice for the young men and women who will be tomorrow’s citizen-leaders.
