Randolph College Students and Faculty Present Research

Two Randolph College faculty members and three students presented research at the American Physical Society’s National Meeting in Washington, D.C. in February.

Iva Gerasimenko ’10, a physics major, presented research completed during a NASA internship in the summer of 2009, “Examination of Wave Band Pattern Feature Observed in Northwestern Monterey Bay Airborne Imagery During the 2009 SARP Project.”

Cheridan Harris ’10, also a physics major, presented her senior research project, “Approximate Solar Temperatures from Color Indices Measured at the Winfree Observatory.” Harris worked with Professor of Physics Tom Michalik.

Marja Copeland ’11, an environmental science major, presented research conducted last summer with Peter Sheldon, a Randolph physics professor. Her project was titled, “Hands-on Inquiry Science for Improving Teacher Quality and Student Achievement.”

Sheldon presented his research, “Amusement Park Physics: Data-Collection Equipment,” completed with Kacey Meaker ’08. Tatiana Gilstrap, an environmental science and physics professor, also presented research, “Variations of the Magnetic Field at CNSC, VA.”

The students received partial funding from travel grants provided by the American Physical Society and the Summer Research Program
