Exempt Activities

Exempt Activities Forms

The following animal use activities do not require a full protocol application, HOWEVER Principal investigators or Instructors in charge of exempt animal use activities still MUST complete and submit Form Y to notify the IACUC of said activities. Form Y must be approved by the IACUC prior to the exempt activity taking place.

Field and observational studies of free-living wild animals in their natural environment are exempt if they meet all of the following conditions, and if there are no other requirements for IACUC approval:

  1. The study does not include an invasive procedure, nor does it harm or materially change the behavior of animals being studied
  2. The study does not include capturing, trapping, herding, confinement, transportation, handling (as per AWAR §1.1), housing, treatment, or euthanasia of animals. “Treatment” includes anesthetization, tagging or marking in any way, and sample collection.
  3. Study activities do not cause excessive disturbance to animals and/or their habitat.
  4. The study is not funded by the United States government.
    • Standard veterinary care activities.
    • Domesticated vertebrates observed (with no intervention) under generally-accepted agricultural management practices.
    • Projects that uses non-mammalian vertebrate embryos that are less than half-way through the incubation period.
    • Projects that have current IACUC approval at another institution.
