Essential Functions: Assisting Mail Room staff with the accurate and quick sorting and distribution, including lifting and movement of first class U.S. Mail, campus mail, parcels, boxes, containers, and other paper communications for faculty, staff and students; completion of package receipt notices; processing of service requests at customer window (i.e. package pickups, weighing packages and letters, selling stamps, and other package and expedited mail services, including USPS, UPS and FedEx, etc.); operation of weight scales, postage meter machine; assist with labeling and sorting of third class and large quantity bulk mailings; etc. Answer business telephone with proper greeting, assisting caller with Mail Room operational-related questions. If end of day closing responsibilities are assigned, will insure that Mail Room doors, exterior windows, and customer window are all properly secured and in good working condition.
Qualifications: A positive, friendly, helpful demeanor is required. Must be resourceful and knowledgeable of the campus, general Mail Room services and operations, or willingness to learn. Computer knowledge/skills helpful. Ability to accurately handle inbound and received mail, and identify proper receiver is critical. Attention to detail is desired as Student Assistant may provide support in tracking campus departmental use of mail services, record-keeping, postage, copy services, filing, operation of cash register, mailbox labeling, surface cleaning, straightening of materials and/or supplies, etc. Ability to work independently or with minimal direct supervision is necessary. Workplace safety rules must be observed to avoid injury to oneself or others.
Working Environment: Position typically works in an office environment with other employees. Requires standing/walking/bending/sitting for extended periods of time. May occasionally lift parcels, boxes, containers weighing no more than 25 pounds. Must seek assistance with any item considered over this weight, or too heavy to lift or move alone.
Hours: Varied between 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday during the academic year.
