Watch the films on your own, and then tune in to the Zoom discussion to share your thoughts. Tune in for the whole series, or tune in for one film, the discussions promise to be lively and thought-provoking.
This week’s selection…
(Mati Diop, 2019) 1 hr. 47 mins. [Netflix]
A sensual and allusive sideways glance at the migrant crisis, this film borrows from Homer’s Odyssey and has some genre-bending surprises up its sleeve. Dakar’s modern-day Penelope eagerly awaits the return of her boyfriend, who has set out to sea in search of a brighter future. Nominated for the Palme d’Or, the highest honor at the Cannes Film Festival, French filmmaker Diop became the first black woman to receive this honor. I’m eager to explore the cultural hybridity at the heart of this film.
Don’t forget the popcorn!
