Supporting Children’s Social Engagement Through Musical Play

Tuesday, July 21, 2020
12:00 p.m. EDT
Online via Zoom (Download Zoom)

Sara Beck’s research centers on how children’s active engagement with music and media can be leveraged to facilitate prosocial behavior and inclusion. As a lifelong musician and a firm believer that everyone can “do” music, she is interested in how making music with others can foster social bonding in both children and adults. She has looked at preschool-age children’s sharing and helping following brief musical interactions, and she continues to investigate how synchronous movement during music making affects social bonding in children and adults.

As a graduate student at Vanderbilt University in 2017, she joined Dr. Miriam Lense in co-creating an integrated parent-child music class for children with and without Autism Spectrum Disorder (www.serenademusicclass.org). The collaboration has continued with the creation of additional music and parent support materials, including an online musical toolkit for parents who wish to use musical play to support social interaction and development.
