FAQ for Faculty

Q: How do students made an appointment with a Writing Lab Tutor?

A: Appointments are scheduled through the portal. The student logs in and selects MyLinks > W > Writing Lab Appointments. Students may make appointments in advance from week two of the semester. The Lab closes on the last day of classes.

Q: Can I require my student to attend the Writing Lab?

A: Yes! There are many ways to incorporate visits to the Writing Lab into your syllabus. You might award credit or extra credit for visits to the Writing Lab or require that students review polished drafts with a tutor prior to handing in final versions. You might also require that students take papers post-grading to the Writing Lab in order to discuss your comments. If you require revisions to papers, the Writing Lab tutors can help your students consider strategies to improve their work.

Q: Will I be notified when my students visit the Writing Lab?

A: In most cases, yes. At the close of each session, the Writing Lab tutor sends a brief report to the professor. However, students do have the right to request that the professor not be told of the visit. In these rare cases, the Director of the Writing Program receives a copy of the report. If she feels it necessary, she will talk with the tutee to ascertain the reason behind such a request.

Q: How much help can a student receive on a paper?

A: Students are allowed to meet with tutors three times for any one paper. Tutors are able to assist at all stages of the writing process, from brainstorming to reviewing a final draft. Tutors are not allowed to line edit student papers. This would be in contravention of the Honor Code.
