III. Faculty: Personnel Policies, Practices, and Procedures

N. Policies and Procedures Governing Faculty Grievances

Before a faculty member brings a formal grievance, he/she shall attempt to resolve the matter informally. If the faculty member then decides to bring the grievance, the procedures to be followed are:

1. Contact the chair of the Academic Personnel Committee who will arrange for consultation with the Faculty Members of the Academic Personnel Committee or the Appropriate Subcommittee of the Academic Personnel Committee.

2. If the faculty member is not satisfied with the way in which the subcommittee responds to the grievance, the chair of the Academic Personnel Committee shall be so informed. The Chair shall arrange for the formation of an ad hoc committee made up of three members of the faculty who shall study the matter and make recommendations to the Administration. The ad hoccommittee shall serve in an advisory role only. The three members shall be selected as follows: one by the aggrieved faculty member, one by the President of the College, and the third, who chairs the committee, by the other two members; or if they are unable to reach agreement, by the chair of the Academic Personnel Committee (or the chair's nominee in the case when the chair has a conflict, see number 3. below).

3. In cases where the grievance concerns matters in which the full Academic Personnel Committee has already been involved, or when the aggrieved party is a member of the Academic Personnel Committee, the faculty member may at the outset request the formation of an ad hoc grievance committee, which shall be composed as described above.
