Physicists Meet in New Orleans
March 13, 2008

Senior physics majors Kacey Meaker and Reeju Pokharel attended the largest gathering of physicists in the world, the American Physical Society's March Meeting. They traveled to the meeting in New Orleans with Professors Peter Sheldon and Tatiana Toteva. All four presented original research at the conference, and as vice-chair of the national Committee for the Status of Women in Physics, Professor Sheldon organized and chaired one session ("Where is the center of mass for career and family") and helped to organize and co-chair a second session ("International Gender Issues in Physics").

Reeju Pokharel (below) presented her senior research project "Why Not Solar Power?" Both presentations were very well received with a significant amount of interest. Peter Sheldon presented the results from summer research done with Professor Peggy Schimmoeller and two graduates (Jessica Maidment and Sunnie Joshi,) "Impact of Inquiry-Based Learning on Attitudes and Science Content Knowledge of Elementary School Teachers and Students." Tatiana Toteva presented her research done with two Randolph College students (Archana Datta and Reeju Pokharel,) "Using radar waves to image subsurface heterogeneities: a case study from Randolph College, VA."
