Computer Science

The field of computer science encompasses much more than just using computers and writing programs. It is essentially the science of creating abstractions, or conceptual models, of real-world problems and of the thought processes that are used to solve them. You can study computer science for its own sake to prepare for a professional career in software development, or you can combine it with another major field to add an extra dimension of analytic and technical ability. Either way, the study of computer science is unsurpassed in its effect in sharpening and refining your problem-solving skills.

Randolph's computer science concentration is competitive with major programs at other small colleges. When combined with appropriate courses in mathematics and physics, the concentration provides preparation for professional work or graduate study in computer science. You'll gain skills that are highly prized in the job market, including experience in:

  • Computer programming with object-oriented techniques
  • Development and analysis of algorithms
  • Creating appropriate abstractions and representations of data
  • Implementation of programming languages
  • Computer hardware organization and operating systems

And you don't have to narrow your focus. At Randolph, you can combine the computer science concentration with any other academic major; in the past, students electing the concentration have majored in fields such as art, economics, mathematics, and physics. You'll graduate with unique and highly marketable skills.

Gain valuable experience
The Randolph summer Student/Faculty Research Program offers you the opportunity to engage in research opportunities that involve computer science. Working closely with Randolph faculty, you'll gain valuable hands-on experience.

In addition, the Career Development Center (CDC) can help you find exciting and résumé-enhancing internships in computer science.
