Academics
Phase I: Emerging Leaders

Expectations of the Emerging Leaders

In the first year of the program you will be devoted to learning about yourself as an emerging leader.  In the fall, you will learn about the Social Change Model of Leadership and the 7C's - the values underlying the Model, through a short retreat and seven weekly sessions.  You will also be encouraged to join a student organization - this will help provide a context for group discussions each week as we explore each of the Cs.  You will continue to build your knowledge of leadership and leadership skills in the spring semester.

The spring program provides an opportunity for you to explore your interests.  The Davenport Leadership Program will sponsor a series of workshops that will focus on leadership or skills areas; you will have to attend at least four of these workshops.  In addition, you will visit three local community service agencies to gain an understanding of how the agency meets the needs of the community and how the individuals in these agencies lead and serve their community.  The Davenport Program will also sponsor two dinners with alumnae, community, or corporate leaders, you will be invited to attend one of these dinners to learn more about how individuals lead.  At the conclusion of the year you will be asked to reflect on your experience in Emerging Leaders and your development as a leader.  You will then submit a short paper about on your reflection.

The Emerging Leaders are focused on the following objectives…

  • develop a personal definition of leadership to frame their leadership learning experience
  • develop an understanding the philosophy underlying the Social Change Model of Leadership
  • develop and understanding of each of the 7 C’s values of the Social Change Model of Leadership
  • developing personal and group leadership skills around the three sequences of the Social Change Model: The Individual; The Group; and The Community/Society
  • develop and enhance leadership knowledge and skills through workshops, speakers, and readings (optional)
  • Assess growth in learning about leadership and their capacity to lead through reflection

Phase I: Emerging Leaders
Building Leaders

"The Davenport program has definitely changed my perception of myself as a leader. Before this experience I would have never considered myself a leader. I have always seen myself as a laid back person who feels that my [first] concern is myself and meeting my goals. After this experience, I can see that by being more vocal and less selfish can accomplish a lot and learn in the process."
