Randolph Student's Photo Selected for Magazine Cover

LYNCHBURG – Jeff Reid ’11 knows what it is like to be in the right place at the right time. As a freelance photographer, he almost always keeps an eye out for interesting photo material.

That’s just what happed one fall afternoon last year. And that keen eye earned him the cover of Shenandoah , a well-known literary journal based at Washington & Lee University.

Reid was at the National D-Day Memorial in nearby Bedford that October day and came across ivy growing on a wall near one of the exhibits. The rest, as they say, is history.

“There was something about the bold autumn colors of the leaves and the intricate vine patterns,” he said. “I snapped a few shots and didn’t think much about it until I got home.”

The lighting, color, and patterns resulted in amazing images, and Reid submitted a few to editors of the Washington & Lee magazine. Within a day, he received a reply and the result was the cover the 2009 fall issue.

“I was thrilled,” he said.
