Communications Students Take Home Honors From Conference

LYNCHBURG — Two Randolph College students earned awards in this year’s annual Student Undergraduate Research Forum (SURF). The conference, held Feb. 7 at Lynchburg College, featured four participants from Randolph.

Amanda Johnston ’09 earned second place for “Leaving Our Mark: Textual Analysis of Desk Graffiti” and Jalika Conteh ’10, earned third place for “The Gaze: Spectatorship in Rear Window and Disturbia.

Other participants included Dinah King ’10, who presented, “Swagga Like Baudrillard: Rap as a Postmodern Text,” and Alisha Dingus ’11, who presented “The Genius of ‘Gossip Girl.’”

The annual SURF conference is designed to promote undergraduate collegiate scholarship in the discipline of communication by offering students an opportunity to present original research projects and share their knowledge and experiences with students of other local academic institutions. Randolph’s students were accompanied by Jennifer Gauthier, assistant professor of communications and Wanda Fenimore, adjunct professor of communication studies.

The research presented at the SURF conference addressed issues in communication from a variety of areas including but not limited to speech communication, mass communication, film, rhetoric, graphic design, interpersonal communication, and advertising/public relations.
