Social Life for New International Students

Randolph College students study hard, but they also find balance through a close knit community that finds unique ways to enjoy life. Here are some tips for finding your place in our community.

Cultivate Friendships

Get to know your roommate, floormates, and other students in your classes. Late-night study breaks in the Skeller and middle-of-the-hallway chat sessions enrich the experience of students in our close-knit community.

Join a Group

From Student Government to the Randolph Programming Board (RPB) to the French Club to Creative Writing, there’s a club for every interest—activities providing just the kind of leadership or social interaction you want. Held during the second week of classes is the Involvement Fair—an opportunity to join clubs, sign up for volunteer service in the community, and find out about all there is to do. Watch the portal for announcements about the Involvement Fair and other great opportunities!

Attend Campus Events

You can attend coffeehouse performances, dance concerts and musical events, hall programs, athletic competitions, movies, plays, and lectures. Various programs are provided every week to expand the living-learning potential of the Randolph College experience. Students are also encouraged to develop their own programs and activities. Stop by the Dean of Students office to see how you might help shape social and cultural life at Randolph.

Traditions

At Randolph, we have a serious thing for silly traditions. Nothing brings generations of Randolph alumnae and alumni together like the shared experience of sneaking out late at night to decorate the entire campus or selecting the craziest hat to wear with your senior robe.  Sure it might be silly, but you’ll never have more fun.

Athletics

The WildCat Athletics program offers exciting intercollegiate sports for women and men. Women’s programs are offered in basketball, cross country, indoor track & field, lacrosse, outdoor track & field, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis and volleyball. Men’s programs are offered in basketball, cross country, indoor track & field, lacrosse, outdoor track & field, soccer, swimming, and tennis. Randolph College is a member of the NCAA Division III and the highly competitive Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC).

Get Off Campus

Go to a nearby park. Explore the miles of walking and biking trails of Blackwater Creek Trail. Go roller-skating, walking, or hiking. Shop at River Ridge Mall, Target, or Wal-Mart. Go on trips sponsored by MAC. Go to a Lynchburg Hillcats baseball game. Do volunteer work in the community. Enjoy the change in perspective.

Visit Other Colleges

Central Virginia Community College, Liberty University, Lynchburg College, Sweet Briar College and Virginia University of Lynchburg are local; Hampden-Sydney College, Longwood University, the University of Virginia (UVa), Virginia Military Institute (VMI), and Washington and Lee University are all about an hour away.

Volunteer

As a Randolph College student you will have boundless opportunities to get involved on campus and in the city of Lynchburg through service and volunteerism. As soon as you arrive, you will discover Randolph College students, faculty, and staff are highly involved in the Lynchburg community. Each year, our students volunteer thousands of hours locally; activities have included preparing meals for the homeless, tutoring in local schools, providing holiday gifts to needy children and elderly residents, and serving as Big Sisters and Big Brothers to community children. Some of these activities are coordinated by the Office of Student Involvement, but many of our students volunteer their time on their own. Our faculty and staff are just as involved in community service; many of them volunteer weekly as tutors, build homes for Habitat for Humanity, and assist with providing shelter and food for the less fortunate in our area.

There are also ways to volunteer on campus—the American Red Cross Bloodmobile always needs assistance when they visit, and there are a number of community agencies offering opportunities either on campus or within walking distance.

If you are inclined to venture outside the Red Brick Wall to volunteer, the opportunities are as vast as your imagination. Contact the Dean of Students office at (434) 947-8819 for more information about specific opportunities.

Spiritual Life

Randolph College has a proud history of religious and spiritual engagement and acceptance. Chaplain Jennifer Moore can help connect you with spiritual and religious fellowship via organized groups, local churches and congregations, or other students and faculty of shared faiths. www.randolphcollege.edu/student-life/experience/religious-spiritual-life/
