Biology Laboratory Technician (Full-time August through May)

Randolph College has an opening for a full-time 10-month (August through May) Biology Laboratory Technician. The starting date is August 1, 2018. The position provides lab support, particularly in the areas of molecular biology and microbiology.  The Biology Lab Technician stocks, prepares, and sets out media, live cultures, prepared biological specimens, reagents, consumables, equipment, and other supplies for all lab courses in the department.  The position also involves training, coordinating, and supervising student workers who assist in laboratory preparation and/or in maintenance of biology facilities.  The technician monitors and maintains laboratory equipment, keeps inventory and service agreement records, and serves as the point person for equipment maintenance. The technician is also responsible for departmental purchases and assists the department chair with budget accounting.

The position involves working in a laboratory environment approximately 75 percent of the time and in an office environment approximately 25 percent of the time. Travel is infrequent, but some weekend work may be required. Candidates must be able to walk and stand up to 7 hours per day, bending and lifting up to 40 pounds on a regular basis, and climb a ladder on occasion.

The minimum educational requirement is a Bachelor of Science in biology.  The Biology Lab Technician is responsible for the preparation of media, solutions, reagents, and live cultures for teaching labs and must be skilled with these techniques.  A comprehensive and robust understanding of the techniques, skills, and standard practices of microbiology, cell biology, molecular biology, and genetics teaching labs is REQUIRED.  Familiarity with the techniques, skills, and standard practices of introductory biology, botany, physiology, zoology, ecology, animal behavior, ornithology-mammalogy, and developmental biology teaching labs is PREFERRED.  The technician must have excellent interpersonal, organizational, management, communication, and budgeting skills.  Attention to detail, ability to work independently, and basic computer skills are necessary for full consideration.
