Science + Art Saturday High School Workshops


Maier Museum of Art - 10 a.m.
Open to high school students, free of charge. Optional lunch after the workshop included. Workshop details and registration (required) at randolphcollege.edu/sciencesaturdays Saturday, September 7 | Cyanotypes and Chickens What?s going on in the organic garden? Allison Brooks, sustainability coordinator at Randolph College, will lead a tour of the acre garden adjacent to the Maier and discuss sustainability practices on campus. Then, gather natural materials and harness the power of the sun to create cyanotypes, a camera-less photographic printing process. Saturday, October 5 | Picture Books Examine the art featured in the exhibition, "Children?s Book Illustrations: Visual Storytelling" and learn about the history of children?s literature. Then, create chapbooks, pocket-sized books that were the first books illustrated for children. Saturday, November 2 | Narrative Monoprints with Jill Jensen Award-wining artist Jill Jensen joins us! Explore ways to use texture, stamped and stenciled images, and layered colors to create bold, graphic monoprints that tell a story. We will use a small printing press and discuss a brief history of printmaking. Saturday, December 7 | Experiments with Gouache, Ink and Watercolor Several of the artists featured in the exhibition "Children?s Book Illustrations: Visual Storytelling" use gouache, ink, and watercolor to render fanciful and realistic imagery. Learn about the chemistry and history of the media and then experiment with each material.
